  • The Marine Biological Association’s first Chairman was T.H. Huxley, known affectionately as ‘Darwin’s Bulldog’ for his support of Darwin’s theory of evolution.

  • The National Marine Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the UK. It also has the deepest tank in the UK at 10.5 metres.

  • In 2009 the National Marine Aquarium hired a Boeing 767 and landed the largest collection of live animals ever in the UK. The 42-tonne shipment contained 1000 individuals of 18 species.

  • Robert Falcon Scott is a famous Plymothian having been born in Stoke Damerel, near Devonport in Plymouth. 2011 is the 150th anniversary of his death and will be marked appropriately in Plymouth by PMSP.

  • In 2004, the frigate HMS Scylla was scuttled off Plymouth creating an artificial reef for SCUBA divers, the first of its kind in Europe.

  • Research by visiting workers at the Marine Biological Association has led to seven Nobel Prizes.

  • The DDRC is one of the largest hyperbaric medical units in the UK and the only facility with four decompression chambers and dedicated research staff.

  • The Marine Biological Association at Citadel Hill was opened in 1888 making it one of the three oldest marine biological laboratories in the world.

  • PMSP’s 500 staff and 40 million pound turnover make it one of the largest clusters of marine research expertise in Europe.

  • The Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) Survey run by SAHFOS is one of the longest running marine biological monitoring programmes in the world. The first tow was made in 1931.

  • The Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) Survey’s method of sampling and plankton analysis has remained largely unchanged since 1948.

  • Plymouth  University was recently named the ‘greenest’ university in Britain by People and Planet.

  • The National Marine Aquarium and MBA have committed to cut their carbon emissions by 10% in 2010 in line with the 10:10 initiative.

  • In 2007, the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Al Gore were jointly awarded the Nobel peace prize. Dr Carol Turley was a lead author on the 4th IPCC Assessment Report which contributed to this award.

  • Basking sharks don’t hibernate over winter, a research finding by Professor David Sims and his behavioural ecology team based at the MBA.

  • In 2012, the University of Plymouth will open a new marine renewable energy centre complete with two large wave tanks. The facility will be unique in the UK.

  • In 2012, the inaugural Plymouth Marine Festival will take place, a celebration of Plymouth’s rich marine and maritime past, present and future.

  • In 1963, Hodgkin and Huxley were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology. Much of their work on the giant axon (nerve) of the squid Loligo which contributed to this award was carried out at the MBA.
