Long-term datasets show marine species advancing polewards 3 times faster than those on land
The Marine Biodiversity and Climate Change Project (MarClim) project described below focuses on species that tell us about climate change and those that are non-native. Findings of the project include:
• warm water species rapidly increasing in abundance in the UK, and advancing north by up to 50km per decade (3 times faster than changes on land shown in the report in the journal Science);
• cold water species declining in abundance, localised extinctions, southern range edges retracting, and
• detection of non-native species which have escaped from marinas and ports to natural shores.
